The Grapes on Mathew Street Has Closed

The legendary pub based on Mathew Street “The Grapes” where The Beatles would drink before their set at the Cavern Club has closed according to a spokesman for Star Pubs and Bars.

The reason for the closure is not clear at this point and it is hoped that the closure of such an iconic pub is only to be temporary.

At one point in the sixties The Grapes was the only pub in Mathew Street and is famed as being the place where the Cavern Club owner, Alan Sytner , was inspired after a pint there in 1956 to open a Parisian style Jazz cellar bar. Upon leaving The Grapes he spotted the Cavern Club cellar for sale / rent and bought it.
